QuarkXpress tutorials and training courses

QuarkXpress is still the heavyweight of professional desktop publishing applications. But it is far from the easiest package to learn and designers of all levels – from students to art directors – can often struggle with many of Quark's advanced publishing features. This is where training courses come in useful.

Although getting stiff competition from Adobe InDesign, in recent years, QuarkXpress is still a very highly used design layout package, especially in the magazine publishing industry. Indeed, there are many graphic designers that still swear by Quark, over InDesign.

Now, since the recent Quark upgrades to version 6.5 followed by version 7, the Xpress feature set is now on par with InDesign and is even, according to many, more advanced. All of which means that learning new features and being up to date and fully trained with QuarkXpress, is as vital as ever.

There are actually very few online QuarkXpress tutorials. Certainly free ones. Below are some of the few we found that were of any use. Many of these sites provide some kind of paid tutorial services, such as training DVDs, videos and CDs. But we have ensured that, at the time of writing, they do at least provide some online free Quark tutorials.

Quark Inc. training

Quark training

Our first port of call is Quark themselves, who have a limited amount of training resources for QuarkXpress, ranging from version 4 through to 6.5. They also have a resource for finding authorized QuarkXpress trainers and training centers, should you wish to take your studies further.

The tutorials are available as downloadable PDF files and cover the basics of QuarkXpress layouts. The tutorials also include accompanying templates so that students can follow the tutorials with the actual layout.

QuarkXpress tutorials

This site has one very long tutorial, but for beginners it's a very useful one. More experiences QuarkXpress users will not learn much here, but it's a good one-stop shop.

If you really want to understand how to create a new document and format it properly, with master pages and style sheets, then you could do worse than start here.

About.com

About Tutorials

The Quark tutorials on About.com are a mixed bag, but you may find some useful QuarkXpress tips and tricks. About is a massive site and suffers, in our opinion, from some intrusive navigation elements and, when we checked, out of date links. But it is worth a browse and some of the tutorials are useful.
