Saving file formats for use in DTP layout programs. TIFF, EPS, PSD and transparant layers.

Which Photoshop file format to use for DTP layout?

Photoshop questionsWhat is the best file format to save for use in a DTP layout program, TIFF, EPS or PSD?

Photoshop tips

Both TIFF (or TIF) and EPS files have been used extensively in page layout programs since the early days of digital publishing. In recent years both InDesign and QuarkXpress have been able to import native PSD files, layered TIFs and even Acrobat PDF files.

As ever the final decision should probably be based on a discussion with the printer who will be dealing with the job. In general their should be no difference between importing EPS or TIFF files into a DTP application. However, the new extended TIFF format which supports saving with layers intact is generally not recommended. Caution should also be used with native Photoshop files and, once again, checking with the print or pre-press department is always recommended.
