Design reviews – Photoshop alternatives 1Although Adobe Photoshop is the premier graphics editor for print design, there are some alternatives. And in the field of web site graphics, it even has some very close rivals. On this page we start with Paint Shop Pro, followed by the artists toolbox, Corel Painter. Paint Shop Pro Paint Shop Pro was once sneered at by graphics professionals as an amateur, or home user's image application. And they probably had point. But recent updates to Paint Shop Pro have brought about a very different package.
Recent versions of Paintshop Pro have added a number of filters and texture effects, as well as a Photoshop-like history palette. If Photoshop is outside of your budget and you don't plan on doing any design for print, then Paint Shop Pro is worth a quick look. Although, Macintosh users should be aware that it is only available for Windows. Corel Painter Painter is more of a digital artists toolkit than an image editor. Corel Painter is certainly capable of providing some basic image editing and adjustment features.
Corel Painter can simulate different styles of painting, such as water color, oil painting and various chalks and pastels. It has an almost unlimited number of brush effects and control palettes (some people even say too many palettes) and, in the hands of a skilled artist, its creative range is limitless. Painter is a tool that would probably benefit best from the use of a pressure sensitive graphics tablet, such as those produced by Wacom. Indeed, for the true feel of 'natural' paint effects, a drawing tablet would soon become indispensable. Definitely more of a print tool than a web graphics tool, recent versions of Painter now also support CMYK graphics.
