Quark has released version 6.5 of QuarkXpress. It is billed as a free upgrade, although many users believe it to be as much a bug fix as anything else. As well as addressesing a some issues, Quark claims that a number of the new features have been developed "in direct response to user requests". This includes QuarkVista, a built-in image editor that allows users to adjust colour balance and edit levels, image brightness and contrast.
Perhaps most importantly, the new version of QuarkXpress allows the import of native Photoshop files, with layers intact, and allows users to switch these layers on and off within Xpress. This is something that even Adobe's own DTP layout package, InDesign, cannot do. Numerous other new features are included and it is seen as part of Quark's bid to win back customer loyalty, in the face of competition from InDesign.
QuarkXpress 6.5 upgrade is available for download now for registered users. Quark has also posted a page for resolved issues and for known issues.
