QuarkXpress

Quark Inc., publishers of desktop publishing software QuarkXpress, have recently released an announcement that the introduction of free technical support and a number of other improvements in customer service have been an overwhelming success. Quark introduced free customer support in November 2004 as part of a complete overhaul of its much maligned attitude towards its customers. Until recently it was a commonly held view about QuarkXpress, in the design industry, that graphic designers loved the product - but hated the company. This can only be heralded as a large - if long overdue - step forward. It is certainly a welcome move.
The big test will be to see if Quark can keep up this process up and finally shed their previous reputation. It also remains to be seen if the reality of user experience bears out the press releases. However, it is true to say that this is just one of many steps that Quark has taken in the past 12 months to improve its image. The software itself, QuarkXpress, has also been receiving favourable reviews of late and the recent free update to version 6.5 has really brought the product back into the fight with Adobe's InDesign for number 1 place amongst page layout products. This can only be good for the graphic design and pre-press industry and Design : Talkboard looks forward to some interesting upgrade wars between the two products.
