Photographic blogging

It seems that the online democratisation of creativity is unstoppable. First we had terribly designed and badly coded html home pages about pet budgies or strange hobbies. Then we had blogging, where anyone who could use a keyboard was able rant and rave to their heart's content. Now, welcome to the next stage - Photoblogging!
The brainchild of husband and wife team Caterina Fake and Stewart Butterfield*, flickr.com is a new photo-sharing web service that allows users to post photographic galleries of their images online. With the increasing public use of digital cameras, camera phones and video cucumbers (one of those may a fictitious product), it's easy to see how flickr.com was a project waiting to happen. A bigger question is the degree to which technology is allowing amateurs to believe that they can produce professional results. As creative professionals, should we welcome this new found creative enthusiasm? Or should we be worried?
* Stewart Butterfield is also a founder of The 5k - devoted to web sites that come in at under the 5k download size. Worth a visit for all budding web designers.

More general information about blogging can be found at Google's Blogger. Some interesting design related blogs include, The Design Weblog, Design Observer (perhaps not strictly a bog, but these things can tend to merge after a while. It's a great resource anyway), Mandarin Design. Please let us know if you know of any others and we will consider them for the Design Talkboard Creative Directory. |
