An iPod fan who posted a home made animated iPod commercial on his web blog, has caused an almighty stir in the advertising world. Despite posting the 'advert' without any fuss on his site, word spread quickly and very soon tens of thousands of people had viewed the production. Set to the beat of "Tiny Machine" by 1980s pop band the Darling Buds, the 'advert' is a psychedelic rendering of several iPod minis. Quite what spurred him to make the advert is unclear. Quoted in Wired, Masters claims that he simply created the advert for fun. "I love motion graphics. I like creating visuals", he said.
However, it appears that every advertising executive and professional marketeer is tripping over themselves to gush about how wonderful a development this is and what opportunities it opens up for the future of advertising. But whether other brands can really generate the kind of brand loyalty that Apple commands is questionable. Or maybe not. Are we witnessing the start of some kind of ultra-consumerism, where workers wind down after a hard day in the office, by creating their own commercials for washing powder and dog food?
