Adobe seek to standardise digital storage of images |
Adobe have released a free tool to convert raw format images, used by many digital cameras, to the Digital Negative File format. In an attempt to protect the future accessibility of image archives this format will, in theory, standardise photographic storage formats so that they will still be accessible for years in the future. Currently, many digital cameras use their own proprietry formats. Adobe claims that the .DNG format will allow digital camera manufacturers to retain some of their proprietry features, whilst remaining compatible. Also, unlike JPEGs, the .DNG format does not degrade image quality.
The Adobe DNG Converter is available as a free download. It translates raw formats from more than 65 cameras, including recent models from Canon, Epson, Fuji and Nikon. |
