Ever since designers started getting involved in the web, there has been an ongoing debate about the degree to which graphic designers should get involved with the 'dirty' business of coding. Many feel that after several years university and an apprenticeship in creative design, that learning how to code is just too much bother. Other graphic designers just can't get their left side of the brain working well enough to even contemplate hand coding HTML, let alone any of that scary back-end stuff.

Luckily for the more technically challenged web designers, there is a halfway option. Ready made scripts. Hotscripts is probably the largest resource for CGI scripts on the web. Clearly categorised by technology type (Perl, PHP, ASP, XML and others), web designers can browse by category, or search the site for scripts that can bring almost any type of interactivity to otherwise static web sites. David Carson

David Carson's web site

David Carson is one of the World's most famous graphic designers. A living tribute to the fact that self-taught designers can make it, Carson is best know for his surf related designs and for the book 'The End of Print'. But he's not to everybody's liking. This is an article by someone who is certainly not a fan of Carsons. "Illegible" David Carson cannot not communicate is well worth a read, for an alternative viewpoint. But it is undeniable that Carson, like Neville Brody, has contributed much to the industry since the mass adoption of desktop publishing.
