Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)
GIF images are used extensively on web sites. They are useful because they can be compressed to a very small file size and so are utilised extensively for logos and buttons.
GIFs are made smaller by excluding as many shades of color as possible, whilst still maintaining a reasonable representation of the image. As such they are better for use in flat coloured graphics, such as logos, rather than photographic images.
