extend. cutout, contour
A clipping path is a vector outline in a bitmap graphic image, used to 'cut-out' or select a portion of the bitmap graphic. This selection of the image can then be isolated and worked on separately. Or the image can be saved with the clipping path (or paths) and then imported into a page layout package, such as QuarkXpress or InDesign, and printed with just the selected 'cut-out'.
The use of clipping paths in the latest versions of DTP and graphics software, is somewhat redundant. Photoshop can now save TIFFs with multiple layers and these can be imported into InDesign or QuarkXpress directly. The different layers and elements of the image can now be selected from within the page layout application. Moreover, the selections can now have 'soft' edges, as opposed to the sharp, hard edges of an image that has been saved with a clipping path.
Cloning tool
extend. Stamp tool
The Photoshop cloning stamp tool is used to duplicate one section of an image to another part.
There are various uses for this, the most common is to cover up unwanted artifacts in a photograph. This can vary from scratches and smudges, to undesirable figures, lampposts, dustbins and so on.

Compound paths
A compound path is actually a combination of two overlapping paths within a vector drawing program, such as Illustrator or Freehand. The combination utilises a feature in Postscript, to allow the appearance of a 'see-through' effect.
This is particularly useful when creating typefaces, or graphics that need to be placed over a colored background.

Control handle
The control handle is the handle that extends from the anchor point in a vector illustration program, such as Corel Draw, Illustrator or Freehand. By moving the handle in one direction or the other, it is possible to make a curved shape and to control the amount of curve in a line.

CorelDraw is a vector drawing application similar to Adobe Illustrator. Cropping
Cropping is the trimming of an image to focus in an area of the image and discarding the unwanted areas. True cropping is generally carried out in graphics programs such as Photoshop or Corel Photo-Paint, where the image itself is trimmed.
In page layout programs, such as QuarkXpress and Adobe InDesign, imported images can be trimmed by excluding areas of the image. But this will preserve the image itself and only affect the display appearance
