Adobe Photoshop CS3 released as a beta download for registered Adobe Creative Suite customers.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 beta download

Graphics software publisher Adobe has announced the availability of a downloadable version of its forthcoming image editor, Photoshop CS3. But it's for registered users only.

The Photoshop CS 3 beta is being released for both Mac and Windows users, with the Mac version being the long awaited Universal Binary, which allows it to be installed on both Intel-based Apple Macintosh systems and PowerPC Macs. Windows designers will need to have either XP or Vista installed to run the beta.

The final release date for Photoshop CS3 is not planned until the Spring of 2007. However, Adobe are making this public beta available so as to "enable customers to more easily transition to the latest hardware platforms".

Adobe claim that Photoshop CS3 will contain many new features and will also include a pre- release version of Adobe Bridge and Adobe Device Central which, according to Adobe, is a tool targeted at the easy creation of mobile graphics content via a preview environment, utilizing built-in device profiles.

To make full use of the beta of Photoshop CS3, designers must have a valid serial number for one of the following packages; Adobe Photoshop CS2, Adobe Creative Suite 2, Adobe Creative Suite Production Studio, Adobe Design Bundle, Adobe Web Bundle or Adobe Video Bundle. According to Adobe, the beta will continue to function until the final version of Photoshop CS3 is released. Designers who do not own an Adobe CS2 product may still download the beta, but it will expire after only 2 days. As ever, with a beta version of any product, it is not advisable to use it for a 'live' design project.

Also, as most graphics professionals will know, Photoshop does require a fairly powerful computer to run at optimum speed. Adobe recommend that Mac users have at least a 1GHz PowerPC G4, G5 processor, or an Intel based Mac and that Windows designers have something similar to an Intel Xeon, Xeon Dual, Centrino or Pentium 4 processor PC setup. Adobe recommend a minimum of 512MB of RAM memory for either Macs or PCs. However, if previous versions of Photoshop are anything to go by, we would suggest at least double that amount, if not more and also plenty of space left on the computer hard disk for scratch memory.

Adobe have yet to announce pricing for the final release. The Photoshop CS 3 beta can be downloaded from Adobe Labs.
