GoLive 9 released by Adobe, not included in Creative Suite and advice is to switch to Dreamweaver CS3.

Adobe releases GoLive 9, but not included in CS3.

Adobe has upgraded their web design application GoLive to version 9, but it will not be included in Creative Suite 3 and designers are being advised to switch to Dreamweaver CS3.

Just when designers had got used to the withdrawal of Freehand from the Adobe stable of software tools, Adobe have announced a reprieve for its WYSIWYG web design application, GoLive.

Adobe GoLive was always targeted at graphic designers who wanted the maximum amount of WYSIWYG design control, without the need to get involved with HTML, javascript or any other hand coding for their web pages.

When Adobe bought Macromedia, along with their prime web design package Dreamweaver, it was assumed by many that GoLive would be discarded. So this update for GoLive is a somewhat surprise move by Adobe.

However, Adobe will not be including GoLive 9 in any of their Adobe CS3 design bundles. In fact, the Adobe GoLive product page has a prominent feature suggesting that designers consider switching to Dreamweaver instead for more advanced and compliant web design features.

New GoLive features

There are some new features in GoLive 9. These include designer styles, which add the ability to apply cascading style sheets (CSS) in a method that will be familiar to users of Adobe InDesign, as it uses familiar character and paragraph style tools. Version 9 also adds InDesign integration, which allows copy and pasting, or drag and dropping of content components between InDesign and GoLive. This will preserve formatting, or applied styles, and automatically translate them into CSS.

GoLive to Dreamweaver

GoLive 9 also adds easy to use visual CSS for use on portable devices such as PDAs and mobile phones, as well as web browsers. Adobe has also updated its web site management tools, which are now based on Adobe Bridge.

So, where does GoLive sit for the future? This is somewhat unclear and we could find no indication as to whether the program will be updated beyond version 9. But it seems that, for professional designers, the development emphasis for the foreseeable future is clearly weighted towards Dreamweaver, which Adobe describes as the industry-leading web design and development tool.

GoLive is only available for purchase as a download and comes as a Universal Binary for both Intel and PowerPC Macintoshes and Windows. According to Adobe, GoLive 9 has also been tested on Windows Vista.
