Macintosh newsApple's new two button designer mouseAfter years of sticking with the one button mouse for its Macintosh computers, Apple has finally announced the release of its own brand multi-button mouse. Apple say that the mouse was designed specifically to work with their new operating system, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. Featuring touch-sensitive technology, Apple's new Mighty Mouse is designed to be as controllable and user friendly as it's one button forerunner, but with the added functionality of right clicking, scrolling functions and squeezable side buttons that allow shortcuts to several of Mac OS X Tiger's applications and features, such as Dashboard and Expose. The Apple Mighty Mouse doesn't actually have two separate buttons, like conventional two-button mice. But, rather, works using special sensors underneath, to detect and even predict the user's intentions. Apple has also implemented its own version of scrolling. Rather than the standard scroll wheel, common with most two button mice, the mighty-mouse utilises a scroll ball, that allows 360 degree movement, designed to be able to follow the users gaze across the screen in every direction. Since the first Apple Macintosh came out, Apple has been supplying Mac users with a single button mouse. The reasons have been largely that of usability and ergonomics. Graphic designers, in particular, have often preferred the single-button mouse, as it was easier to control for precise design work. But Apple has obviously felt that the time is right for its own two button mouse. And in true Apple style, it has not held back on the design budget. 4 August 2005 Other Apple Mac news and features
