3D design software publisher Autodesk has announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Alias, with the deal anticipated to close within the next four to six months.
Alias' design products are used by companies such as Industrial Light & Magic, DreamWorks SKG, Nintendo, General Motors and BMW, to name just some of its high profile customers. The deal is reported to be worth $182 million in cash.
Alias is the manufacturer of a number of 3D design, rendering, animation and modeling tools, including Maya, MotionBuilder and FBX. Maya, in particular, is one of the 3D design industry's most popular high-end applications and is a very high profile product for Autodesk to have in it's suite of creative tools.
Autodesk, itself, has a strong presense in the film, video and interactive games design markets. Its design tools include AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max (3ds Max), which is a long running and popular 3D tool, used extensively in architecture and games design.
If the deal goes ahead, it consolidates the creative software market yet further, alongside the recent merger between Macromedia and Adobe.
