Design newsAnd then there was one! What future for Freehand?Graphics software giants Adobe and Macromedia have announced that they are to merge. What will happen to design software product range? Adobe are the publishers of image editor Photoshop, vector drawing program Illustrator and page layout tool InDesign. Macromedia have been developers of Freehand, Dreamweaver and Flash. For professionals in the graphic design, pre-press and web design industries, this leaves a number of unanswered questions. Many of each companies graphics tools are direct competitors, in terms of the markets they target and the features list. Macromedia have developed rival vector drawing program Freehand since the days when Adobe took over its original manufacturer, Aldus. Freehand has long been the poor relation to Adobe's Illustrator, in terms of user base, and it remains to be seen how stable Freehand's future is. Whilst it seems safe to say Macromedia's Flash multimedia animation tool is probably here for the forseeable future, Macromedia also develop Dreamweaver, which is the World's leading professional WYSIWYG web development software. In this respect, the future of Adobe's rival web tool, GoLive, looks a little shaky. Both companies also have well respected multimedia, animation and motion video tools, such as Macromedia Director, Adobe Premier and After Effects. Broadcast designers and motion graphics professions are going to be watching this merger very closely. Combined with Acrobat, InDesign and a swathe of design, studio management and graphics server tools, the resultant company is likely to be dominant in the design and graphics industry for many years to come.
