Graphic arts hardware releasesMac & PC hardware news for May 2007Dell announces three Linux PC systems Computer hardware manufacturer Dell has unveiled three consumer PC systems which will come with the Ubuntu Linux operating system ready installed. The three machines are the XPSTM 410n and DimensionTM E520n desktop PCs, as well as the InspironTM E1505n portable notebook. Although not used much in professional graphic arts, there are some open source graphics software applications and these may gain prominence in the future as Linux becomes a more mainstream operating system. 25 May 2007 Apple updates entry level MacBook Apple have announced an update to its range of entry level portable computers, the MacBook. Unlike the MacBook Pros, with larger screens and 3D graphics card capabilities, the MacBooks tend to have smaller screens and less expansion capabilities. But the balance with this is more portability and a potentially longer battery life. The new MacBook comes in three versions, two white portables with 2GHz and 2.16GHz processors and a black MacBook running at 2.16GHz 15 may 2007 New paper A4 thin epaper displays LG.Philips have showed off the world's first A4-sized colour e-paper display. The 14", colour display is, as the name implies, paper-thin, flexible and can be viewed from an angle of180 degrees. According to the company, this this means that the display image remains clear even when the monitor is twisted around. The display is less than 300 micrometres thick and, according the manufacturers, is designed to be comparable to print quality. 15 May 2007 Intel announces new fast processors Intel have announced a new faster Core 2 Duo processor, for the new generation of Intel Centrino processor technology used in portable PCs. 10 May 2007 NVIDIA claims fastest graphics card NVIDIA Corporation claim to have produced the world's fastest graphics processing unit (GPU). According to NVIDIA, the GeForce 8800 Ultra is between 10 and 15% faster than their previous top range graphics card the GeForce 8800 GTX GPU. 5 May 2007
