Intel announces Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors. Good news for high-end graphics systems.

Intel announces super fast PC processors

Computer chip manufacturer Intel has announced a new batch of PC processors, entitled Core 2.

According to Paul Otellini, president and CEO of Intel, the new chips are "simply the best processors in the world". Something that their biggest rival, AMD, might have something to say about.

The new chips come in two 'flavors'. The Core 2 processors include 5 designed for laptops and 5 for desktop PCs. The latter includes one chip of particular interest to high-end graphics professionals, called the Intel Core 2 Extreme processor X6800.

Maxing out at 2.93 GHz, with 1066 Bus speed, 4MB of level 2 cache, they bode well as an ideal chip for computer systems used by Photoshop artists, 3D designers and digital animators.

According to Intel, the dual-core chips are ideal for processing multiple tasks at the same time. Video artists and broadcast designers will be interested to hear that the chips are also intended to, "improve tasks, such as viewing and playing high-definition video".

Although the Core 2 Duo processors run at comparatively slower speeds than Pentium chips, they are supposed to be more productive as they process more calculations for each clock cycle. The advantage of this is that the chips draw less mains power, run at cooler temperatures and so require less power from internal fans.

According to Intel, some desktop systems using the Core 2 Duo processors are already shipping, whilst portable chips should be available from August. It will be interesting to see if the long awaited Apple Intel professional desktop Macs will ship with a version of the new chips.
