Famous graphic designers, typographers and creativesPart 2 of our feature on famous and influential graphic designers. Jonathan Ive Probably the most famous contemporary designer in recent times. Jonathan Ive (often misspelled as Jonathan Ives ), is a product designer, rather than a graphic designer, but it is hard to exclude the work of such an influencial creative. Responsible for the the recent designs of the iMac and, of course the iPod, Jonathan Ive leads Apple's industrial design team. Jonathan Ives designs are being credited with helping take Apple's products out of the 'creative ghetto' and bringing them into mainstream consumer market. Discussion about Jonathan Ive. Aldus Manutius Aldus Manutia was the creater of the italic typeface style and patented it. Initially the italic style was not used to emphasise text, but rather was used because it was compact and useful for small publications. William Morris One of the earliest 'artisans' that could also be described as being a graphic designer in the modern sense of the word. William Morris was a craftsman who designed textiles, stained glass windows and was particularly famous for developing unique wallpaper designs. He was also a writer of prose and lecturer on a number of social issues. William Morris set up his own printing press in 1891 and was also responsible for designing three typefaces and producing a number of books. Wally Olins It is hard thinking about the terms corporate identity or branding, without thinking of the name Wally Olins (often incorrectly spelt as Ollins). Wally Olins was a co-founder of the corporate identity and branding agency, Wolff Olins. Wally Olins book 'Corporate Identity' is considered to be the starting point for any serious study of the subject. When you hear art directors or and creative directors mumbling about something being on-brand, chances are they heard it first from Wally Olins. 'On Band' is also the title of his most recent book. Paul Rand Paul Rand was a hugely influencial graphic designer. He lived between 1914-1996 and, over several decades, was considered to be one of the world's foremost innovaters in the field of graphics and advertising. Influencd by many designers and artists, including Le Corbusier and Paul Klee, Paul Rand's designs went on to create a huge impact in the fields of advertising, corporate identity and branding, being responsible for developing brands for such giants as the ABC, IBM and UPS. Paul Rand's books include 'A Designer's Art' and 'Thoughts on Design'.
